That is why the Rio Grande Radiation Center is adding the Varian Halcyon machine to our radiation therapy options for patients with cancer.
“This modern machine is the most efficient and has some of the image guidance on the market today,” said RGU Radiation Oncologist, Dr. Travis Mendel. “This is a great addition to the community,” he added, noting that this Halcyon will be the only one within a 100+ mile radius.

What is the Halcyon and how does it help cancer patients?
This radiotherapy machine provides more efficient and convenient cancer treatment. Thanks to its high-quality image guidance, the Halcyon is able to deliver a higher dose of radiation to the right areas to target cancer precisely, while avoiding areas unaffected by cancer.
“It’s perfect for the majority of patients we treat here,” said Dr. Mendel. This includes patients battling prostate cancer or bladder cancer.
What are the benefits of the Halcyon as compared to other radiation options?
As a result of its ability to provide a higher dose of targeted radiation therapy, patients benefit from fewer treatments. For example, instead of 20 to 44 treatments for prostate cancer, you may only need five treatments with the Halcyon. Plus, the machine delivers radiation more quickly, resulting in shorter appointment times. As a result of this efficient treatment, patients can save time and travel, as well as money, by coming in for fewer appointments.

What are the side effects of this treatment?
According to Dr. Mendel, the Halcyon may mitigate some of the side effects experienced from other radiotherapy options because it helps minimize the delivery of radiation to non-cancerous areas. It also doesn’t introduce any new side effects.
“The radiation treatments are noninvasive,” said Dr. Mendel, meaning you’ll be able to go home immediately following treatment and return to your daily activities.
