Dedicated to Caring for Others
Dr. Herrera-Murillo’s father was a rancher, and though he grew up around animals, he knew early on that he wanted to one day help care for people as a doctor. “I was that kid who wanted to be a doctor when I was six,” he said.
Though he also found a love for swimming and was part of his high school’s competitive swim team, he never let go of his dream to become a doctor. “I said if I didn’t make it to the Olympics, then I would become a physician,” he shared. Both swimming and pursuing medical work require long-term commitment and rigorous training to achieve results, but ultimately, his pathway led him toward medicine.
Following high school, Dr. Herrera-Murillo attended college at the University of Texas, Austin, then medical school at the University of Texas, San Antonio, where he also completed his residency. During that time, he studied alongside skilled physicians who helped him discover a passion for urology and oncology. He was drawn toward this specialty and the opportunity to help solve a variety of urological issues for people from all ages and backgrounds. “The neat part about urology is not only that you get to fix things surgically, but you get to take care of a very diverse population,” he said.

Advancing Oncology and Robotics at RGU
Dr. Herrera-Murillo is joining RGU as a minimally invasive urologist bringing skills with advanced robotics to treat various oncological issues. It’s another aspect he enjoys about this area of medicine. “There are many ways to treat patients,” he said. “It’s very technically advanced, more than people think.”
He also focuses on general urological issues, such as kidney stones and BPH. Dr. Herrera was also very fortunate to train alongside a high level HoLEP (Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate) surgeon in San Antonio. “I’m very excited to bring this unique technology/approach which allows one to tackle large prostate blockages without making a single incision.” And he’s looking forward to working with the dedicated urologists at RGU. “They’re very hard-working and care about their patients. They do as much as they can to take care of the population,” he said.
Dr. Herrera-Murillo shares RGU’s vision for providing each patient with individualized care. And with Spanish as his first language, he’s happy to be returning to a Hispanic population where he understands the community’s needs. “I think it’s very important for patient care to be able to speak patients’ language,” he said.
Dr. Herrera-Murillo is married to his high school sweetheart, and together they have a three-year-old son with another baby soon on the way. When he’s not working, he enjoys time with his family and continues to swim any chance he gets.
